Because it's cheaper than actually dealing with customer service
queries, and it appears that no matter how bad their reputation is,
people are still stupid enough to pay their ridiculously high prices.

I don't see anybody selling the Fujitsu Scansnap s1500 significantly
cheaper.

Even if that were true - which a two-minute google shows it isn't - it
doesn't impact upon the primary point of my post.

It is true. The only companies selling them significantly cheaper
don't have them in stock or have put the price up.
